New Tunes, 4/28/2013: Five Versions of Sally Ann

Today we have five versions of the tune Sally Ann, otherwise known as Sail Away Ladies (and several other names as well). These versions are from the following fiddlers:

  • Doc Roberts
  • Hiram Stamper
  • Owen “Snake” Chapman
  • Tommy Jackson
  • Tommy Jarrell

Of these five versions, Doc’s is the most straightfoward (and the one I would recommend to a beginner), Hiram’s is the scariest, and the two versions from Snake and Tommy Jarrell are the coolest. (IMHO, of course.)

Next time we’ll have some Taters versions of this tune.

Happy fiddling!

New Tunes, 4/15/2013: Five Versions of Sail Away Ladies

Today we have five versions of the well-known tune Sail Away Ladies (also known as Sally Ann, Great Big Taters, and Fever in the South). Included are the two earliest known recordings of this tune, by Uncle Bunt Stephens in 1926 and Uncle Dave Macon in 1927. These five versions are from the following artists:

  • J. P. Fraley
  • Luther Davis
  • Tommy Jarrell
  • Uncle Dave Macon (1927)
  • Uncle Bunt Stephens (1926) (the first to record it, under the name of Sail Away Lady)

These are all great versions of this tune. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have. They are all available in the Sail Away Ladies tune group.

Happy fiddling!
