Ten Melvin Wine Tunes

I have just added ten tunes to the Melvin Wine Collection:

  • Amazing Grace
  • Ballroom
  • Bet My Money on a Bobtail Nag (Camptown Races)
  • Boatin’ Up Sandy
  • Brown’s Ferry Blues
  • I’m so Glad that Jesus Loves Me
  • Possum’s Tail is Bare, The
  • Sally Will You Marry Me?
  • Sugarbaby
  • Whistling Rufus

I can’t say I’m in a big hurry to transcribe more Melvin Wine. I love his fiddling, but it is much more difficult to transcribe than, say, that of Benny Thomasson. In the future, I may not do another batch of Melvin Wine tunes unless and until someone requests some. As always, let me know if there are any Melvin Wine tunes in my transcription queue that you’d like to see sooner rather than later.

Happy fiddling!

Introducing the Lewis Thomasson Collection

Last week, I started a collection of Benny Thomasson tunes. This week, I have started the Lewis Thomasson Collection. Lewis was Benny’s older brother, and while Benny pioneered a somewhat new style with the goal of winning contests, Lewis maintained the fiddling tradition he received from his father, uncles, and grandfathers. This is Texas fiddling how it was before the trick fiddling of Eck Robertson and the contest fiddling of Benny Thomasson. As such, the tunes in this collection are of great interest to me as a researcher. They are also top-notch tunes.

We start with these fifteen tunes:

  • Bush in the Shucks (my current favorite)
  • Cape Girardeau
  • Cattle in the Canebreak
  • Coke County Two-Step (Faded Love)
  • Cruel Master (a Texas jig, if you can believe it)
  • Gatesville (Ballenger)
  • Great Big Taters in Sandy Land
  • Half Past Four
  • Hickman’s Rag
  • I Could Never Love Another Girl Like That
  • Sally Ann Johnson
  • Spanish Two-Step
  • Straw Bonnet
  • Valley Springs Two-Step
  • Wake Up the Neighbors

Happy fiddling!
