Comments:

According to the source website, this field recording was made at the Weiser Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest and Festival in 1974, where Benny won both the National Open and National Senior contests. This waltz was probably written by bluegrass fiddler Kenny Baker, and thus represents cross-pollination between genres. This waltz has three varieties of triplets: fast (triplets over sixteenth notes), regular (over eighth notes), and slow (over quarter notes). It also has what the Irish call “blue notes” that are not played on pitch: play C# notes marked with X somewhere between C-natural and C#. I believe that Thomasson did this intentionally, and it is the first time I have encountered this in American fiddling.
