I was surprised to find this tune in anybody’s repertoire, as I have always encountered it with doggerel lyrics for children (under the guises of We are Hungry Birds Waiting in the Wilderness and the somewhat disturbingly militaristic I’m in the Lord’s Army). Moore states that he learned this from Texans Norman and Betty Solomon, and that it dates back to the Civil War.

The B part of this tune may pose a little difficulty. You have to hold an E on the second string for the first two measures of each line of the B part. Also look out for sixteenth notes in both parts.
