Comments:

West Virginia fiddler Melvin Wine played this interesting version of Forked Deer. This tune is often found with a key change, with the A part in one key and the B part in another. Wine’s setting sounds like it has a key change in the middle of the A part, starting with A and then switching to D. I have not notated it as such, but instead I transcribed it entirely in D. His setting is also crooked. The A part has six measures rather than eight, and the B part has two extra beats tacked onto it when transitioning back to the A part. There is a potentially difficult passage in the A part where you have to hold an A on the third string while playing melody on the second string. Play this tune with a little swing.
