At the end of the recording, a voice can be heard saying “Man, that’s tough!” While this isn’t the most difficult of Thomasson’s tunes by far, it is quite challenging. Thomasson presents some excellent contest-style variations on the old standard Durang’s Hornpipe. Due to the number and complexity of the variations, I have not tried to identify individual repetitions of the tune. (A definitive A part can be found in the first and next-to-last sections. Make of that what you will.) Some of the variations remind me of Whiskey Before Breakfast. There is a high passage, going up to a high D on the first string, that may require playing in third position. Also be careful of octave jumps, sixteenth notes, triplets, and accidentals.
