Comments:

Goforth recorded Sally Goodin at least three times: for the Stike Up the Bow album, for the Eminence Breakdown album, and in a home video with John Hartford (available on YouTube). Of the three, I like the video version best. This transcription is of Goforth’s playing in the video.

Like Texas fiddler Eck Robertson’s seminal 1922 recording of Sally Goodin, Goforth’s version is a collection of virtuosic variations rather than a tune with well-defined parts and repetitions. I have numbered the distinct strains with Roman numerals. Several of them require you to hold an A on the third string while playing melody on the second. Strain XI is a minor variation. Strains IX and XII are high variations, going up to a high C# and a high E, respectively.
