Stokes recorded Rocky Pallet with the Skillet Lickers in 1929. There is something je ne sais quoi about this recording, the way the guitar backs the melody, the way the two fiddles harmonize, that just makes me feel good. This is, for me at least, a recording that perfectly embodies what old time string band music is all about.

The ending goes up to a high E, but you get to slide up to it. Don’t worry if you can’t hit it exactly; Stokes himself was a little off in the recording.
